ʻUlana ʻIe: Beginning Hawaiian Basketry w/ Visiting Artists Kumulā‘au & Haunani Sing

This workshop will teach participants how to start and finish a basket with a cover in the tradition of Hawaiian Basketry. Participants will learn how baskets were traditionally made with ʻieʻie (Freycinetia arborea) and will explore the process from start to finish, including gathering of ʻieʻie, preparation and cleaning of the rootlets, and the final weaving into beautiful various pieces such as hīnaʻi (baskets), hīnaʻi iʻa (fish traps), mahiole (helmet) and kiʻi akua (war god images).
