Some girls collect bags.
Others have shoe fetishes.
I have a swimsuit problem.
(Need proof? See photo above.) But I’m not here to talk about my addiction—I’ll save it for next week’s Swimsuit Anonymous meeting. Instead, with summer on the horizon, I thought it would be fitting to share my “Top 5 Swimwear Shops on Maui.” It’s pretty obvious that a place like Maui would have plenty of places to buy your summertime uniform, but there are definitely a few that rise above the rest. Here are my picks:
HANU HAWAIʻI SWIMWEAR
The way I’ve been talking about Hanu Hawaiʻi Swimwear lately, you’d think I own the company. I wish. In this case, I’ve definitely put my money where my mouth is, recently ordering five suits at once (see right) from this Maui-based online business. These custom-made beauties come in a selection of styles and fabrics—you play designer and the company’s owner, Kahanulani, sews it into reality. It’s such an exciting process—and obviously addicting (again, see photo). I know, the thought of purchasing a swimsuit without trying it on seems crazy. But every single one of the suits fit perfectly, squeezing and supporting me in all the right places. Apparently, I’m not the only one who has fallen in love. The shop has a 5/5 star rating on Etsy. Ladies, take note—Hanu Hawaiʻi Swimwear needs to be in your swim arsenal.
Maui Girl has been delivering itsy-bitsy bikinis from its Paia storefront for more than three decades. This bohemian surf town on Maui’s North Shore is known for its high concentration of stellar swim shops, including at least three that have made it unto the pages of the holy grail of swimwear—Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Designs from this tiny shop have been landing in the magazine for years. I usually gravitate toward its wall of Maui Girl brand mix-and-match solids (see pic). Choose from every shade in the rainbow, in cuts that range from sporty racerbacks for surfing to Brazilian cuts for those who dare to bare.

Located just a few steps away is Letarte, a Maui-based brand that has graced some of the most rockin’ bodies in the world, including 2013 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover model Kate Upton. No stranger to high-profile publicity, Letarte has also been featured on the covers of magazines and catalogs including Victoria’s Secret, Self, Fitness and Bergdorf Goodman, to name a few. And while Letarte suits have outfitted many-a-celebrity—Cindy Crawford and Eva Longoria are fans—the fashionista-next-door is sure to find the right fit. Most Letarte suits run around the $200 mark, which may cause sticker shock for some, but they do last. I’ve owned my turquoise ikat-print suit from Letarte for more than four years now, and it’s still in great condition—and still gets compliments!

THE BIKINI MARKET
I stumbled into The Bikini Market for the first time while waiting for a burger at a nearby take-out joint. Well, more than $200 later, I walked out with a bag full of swimsuits. Hmm, I wonder if I would’ve been so successful if I had walked in after that burger?! Anyhow, this place has a fabulous selection of designer brands, including coveted Hawaii labels including Acacia (I’ll take one of each, thank you very much.), and the super-cute Posh Pua line.

SAN LORENZO BIKINIS
Like I said, Paia is THE headquarters for all things swimwear. This stylish store is making a splash with its huge selection of styles. The store itself is gorgeous, with high ceilings and an industrial chic aesthetic. Come for the bikinis, but stay for the clothes! San Lorenzo Bikinis stocks a super stylish and fun selection of coverups and other beach accessories. This is a great one-stop-shop before a day at the beach!
